Skimming and Scanning for Information
Skimming and scanning are reading techniques that allow you to quickly find the information you need from a lot of text.
The first step is to know what the features of a non - fiction text are.
Now watch these videos to give you an idea of what skimming and scanning are.
Summary
Use Skimming and Scanning to read a lot of text fast and to get the exact information you need
Skimming
The goal of skimming is to get the main idea of the text
1 Read the title - Obvious - It is the first information you get about the text.
2 Read the first sentence of the paragraph - gives you a bit more information.
3 Look for Headings and Subheadings. They give you clues to the information that will be under them.
4 Read the last 2 lines of each paragraph - This sums up the paragraph.
5 Look for important topic words.
Scanning
When you have a question you can ‘scan’ the text for the answer you need.
You know what you are searching for and you try to locate it in the text.
1 Always have in mind what you are looking for - don’t get sidetracked by other interesting information.
2 What sort of information are you looking for - dates, numbers, a sentence, a paragraph.
3 When you find your answer keep reading it until you understand.
