Still Life Photography Challenge
A still life is an artwork that shows a group of arranged objects. Still life objects are inanimate which means they cannot move. Get ready to create a still life photograph! Step 1 - Collect Use the flowchart to collect objects from your home that are interesting, mean something to you and tell a story about your home and your whanau. Step 2 - Composition Think about where and how you are going to arrange your objects. Will you have a plan background or use fabric behind them? Will they be on a table, a window sill or inside a box? Practise arranging your objects in a few different ways until you find one you are happy with. Step 3 - Lighting Think about how the light is falling on your objects. Will you use natural light (the sun) or artificial light (a lamp)? Can you create interesting shadows with your composition? Experiment and see what you can create with light Step 4 - Photograph Think about where you take your photography from (the angle). Will it be at eye level or bird's eye view? Will you have a lot of space around the objects or go close up? Experiment and have fun! Step 5 - Share Share your still life on your padlet. Include an explanation of the objects you chose and why you chose them, why you chose your composition and the view you used when you took your photo. My Still Life and why I chose the objects
LAND - a birds nest that we found in a tree at our house KITCHEN - my jar of sourdough starter, I feed this everyday and use it to make bread for my family BEAUTIFUL - a tea pot from a tea set that I got when travelling through China FUNNY - a mug with “Dad jokes” on them. My favourite Dad joke is “How does a penguin build its house? Igloo’s it together” FAVOURITE COLOUR - BLUE - a blue hair tie that I got for Poppy when we were in Fiji in 2019 SHAPE - A koala cookie cutter, it is special because I love to bake. SOMEONE SPECIAL - A painting that my Grandma who lives in Christchurch painted. It is of a fountain that was on the property where we lived in Australia for 5 years. It reminds me of both my Grandma and our friends in Australia. |

One of my favourite parts of spring is all of the new flowers, the first group of activities involves you collecting flowers, analysing the parts and then creating your own flower art.
Step One:
Head outside and collect a wide range of flowers, leaves and plants. Remember, you are not to pick flowers from other peoples gardens. |
Step Two:
Choose your favourite flower. Look very carefully at the different parts of the flower you have, sketch and label the different parts. |
Step Three:
Pull the flowers apart carefully. See which ways you can group the different parts, you might be able to sort them into leaves, stems and petals. What else can you see? |
Step Four:
Choose a range of pieces from your collection. Reorganise them to create your own flower/plant. |
TREES:
Without trees we would not survive! Here are two videos that you could look at to learn about photosynthesis and an experiment you can conduct to see it happening in real life.
Without trees we would not survive! Here are two videos that you could look at to learn about photosynthesis and an experiment you can conduct to see it happening in real life.
Step One:
Fill a large see through jar or bowl with lukewarm water. |
Step Two:
Head outside and find a large living leaf. You will need to carefully pick a leaf from a tree, rather than pick one off the ground as the leaf needs to be living. You may like to take a leaf rubbing. |
Step Three:
Fully submerge the leaf in your bowl of water. Place a small stone on the leaf to hold it under the water. Place the bowl in a sunny spot. |
Step Four:
WAIT!!!!! This next part takes a few hours, continue on with your day and check back later. |
Step Five:
After a few hours head back and check your leaf. What do you see forming on the surface of the leaf? I wonder what would happen with different kind of leaves? |

Tuesday 31st August
Your daily challenge today is to learn how to do some origami out of any type of paper you have at home (scrap paper, newspaper, magazine or old wrapping paper)
What is Origami?
Origami is the art of paper-folding. Its name derives from Japanese words ori (“folding”) and kami (“paper”). Traditional origami consists of folding a single sheet of square paper (often with a colored side) into a sculpture without cutting, gluing, taping, or even marking it.
